Some days back I noticed one of my
friends complaining about the heavy import duty that was applied on the products
that he imported to India from the US. He was importing a Galaxy s4 and the
authorities were fining him because he did not have any import licence. Now I
am not very clear whether there is any necessity for import licence but I can
inform you that if you need stuff delivered from any other country to India then
you need to pay taxes or import duty.

How is customs duty calculated?
In order to calculate the import duty
you need to keep in mind that the assessed value of the goods may not be the
actual value of the product. It depends on their whims and I think that is where
all the problems come up. If you ordered say a Galaxy s4 for $700 then it is
possible that the officers asses the value to be $800 and charge a 6% duty on
that.
If you are receiving a gift whose
value is less than RS 5000 then you need to pay import duty on that.
